What to do, in order
- Treat it as a signal, not an accident. A first fall is one of the strongest predictors of the next one.
- Get the cause investigated properly. Blood pressure medication, sedatives, vision changes, inner-ear problems and unmanaged pain all drive falls.
- Ask whether anyone was there. A fall with no one present is a different situation from one with someone in the next room.
- Fix the environment while you decide. Grab bars, better lighting, removing loose rugs, a shower bench. Ask your Area Agency on Aging about equipment lending.
- Watch the weeks after. Fear of falling causes people to move less, which weakens them, which causes more falls.
